thinking of you...

i wanted to say something wonderful today. to remember all the people that die or get hurt, in the name of our government. but i couldnt think of anything. my heart has an overwhelming ache.

slowly, the pen touches paper...

Saturday, was Armed Forces Day. And Memorial Day is fast approaching. I don't know if it's possible to remember everyone that needs to be remembered. However, if you are looking for someone to remember, I suggest these two names:

Staff Sergeant Esau I. Delapena-Hernandez
Sergeant Carlie M. Lee III

They died participating in Operation Enduring Freedom, in Afghanistan, last week.

i have a bad case of directionless fervor...

zachs truck

A blogging acquaintance of mine GI Kate, posted a quote on her blog today. She is a Iraq war veteran, as well as a journalism student, in New York. Smart young lady.

And it struck a chord, with me.

"It was hard to remember a time when his whole personality and character had been intact, a time before the cruelty and the destruction of war had warped his soul. A time when he had been deeply in love, passionate, aching with desire, hilariously frivolous and light-hearted, or quickly depressed by love and suffering. Or blushing in embarrassment. When he, too, was worthy of being a lover and in love...
But war was a world with no home, no roof, no comforts. A happy journey, of endless drifting. War was a world without real men, without real women, without feeling."

from a book called The Sorrow of War, by Bao Ninh.

mowing the lawn, gambling on horses, and passing out in pain..

but not in that order.

so last night, i worked, naturally, it being a friday. nothing was out of the usual, maybe it was a little more busy for a friday. anyway, went and got some food at the lincoln-douglas cafe, and chatted it up with some old ladies. i love old ladies, especially the nice ones. anyway, i broke my foot (calcaneus/heel bone) two years ago in june, then last august i tore my plantar fascia (connective tissue in the arch of your foot from your heel to your toes) right where i broke my foot. which didnt make anything better. so, to last night. i end up laying in bed in the fetal position, mainly because i couldnt move. and eventually passed out from the pain. got 4 hours of horrible sleep. its a little better today, but ive got ice packs in the freezer waiting and my medicine.

i went out of town earlier in the week. i had a blast, did just enough and not too much. still, it left me in a funk from feeling overly nostalgic. due to my absence, the grass in my lawn had been extremely neglected. on top of days of rain. so, since it was sunny this morning, i vowed to mow the grass. i tuned up my lawn mower, and tried to start it. nothing. i wasnt going to walk away from that grass till it was cut. so, i got some pliers, fiddled with the spark plug. primed it again, and bingo! the grass was cut. i have dubbed this summer being the one in which i will entirely beautify the yard. by the way, the worst part about being a homeowner next to a plumbbing catosrophe, is properly maintaining ones yard. im planting flowers tomorrow.

monkey with a quince leaf

many of you were aware that today was the kentucky derby. anyway, ever since i can remember, placing bets at the otb has been a family tradition. i dabbled in cards a long time ago. but what the hell do i know about gambling, let alone horses? i hate horses. anyone who knows me, knows that i think horses are kind of like giant dogs. and i hate dogs. anyway, so i wrote down a few names of some long shots, and one name with some decent odds. put cat treats over each name, then let the monkey go to whichever one she picked. it just so happened she picked the winner. i know, this is an amazing strategy. dont hate me. at least she is good for something besides mauling my arms and legs.

happy saturday to you.
