How do you get your B/W photos so rich in contrast? Lens filter, development, photoshop?

some of it is just luck. lighting and camera settings. some development. and a little photoshop. as far as the black and whites go. i also have a tendency to shoot the same thing over and over again, with every available setting till something works out. maybe i have too much time on my hands.
